How about if the games would update automatically when the console is running / in standby .. Just like every platform Steam / Origin etc. do it too.
It's really annoying when you have to update at the start of the game, even though you have watched a film about the box for 2 hours beforehand.

Maybe I just couldn't find the function ...

If you don't turn off the xbox completely every time but leave it in standby, both the console and the games will be updated in the background at night.

Even 20 seconds Google sometimes helps.

    http://support.xbox.com/de-DE/xbox-one/system/learn-about-power-modes

"In order for available updates to be downloaded automatically, this option must be enabled in the Power On / Off & Startup menu. In addition, the console will check for these updates while it is in instant-on power mode. The console must therefore be switched off for it If you chose not to shut down the console in the Power On / Off and Startup menu, the console will not check for updates until it is turned off Automatically turns off 6 hours of inactivity to automatically receive updates in the background. You can also turn off the console when not in use. Otherwise, it may require a small download when launching games and apps. "

So I think that's a little too high for me. I think the 90% use case that the OP is talking about here is:
    1) I don't use standby because the energy costs are a bit too high for that.
    2) I start the console and do something else with it (e.g. watch videos).
    3) After watching videos for an hour, I want to play a game.

When does the XBox start loading the updates? Already while I watch the videos, so from the start? In the text from you it reads as if updates were only searched for when you turn it off, which would be perfect cheese.

Xbox searches for and installs updates while it is on standby. If this function is not used, then Microsoft is probably not to blame.

Since I've had the Xbox One, I haven't seen the console or a game update once. All of this happens in the background without my intervention.

  8. Re: Automatic game updates

    Author: PiranhA 08.07.15 - 15:59

It is logical that this happens during standby, this is what the function is for. But the majority of people don't use it because it's just not worth it. If you play something 3/4 of an hour a day, that's a lot. Rather every 3-4 days or just on the weekend. And for that you don't let the part run 24/7 with the electricity required.
It is only logical that the latest updates are installed when booting if you are not using standby. I can see from the reactions here that this is not the case.

So it is about the parallel download during another function?
If the console is switched on to play and the request to update appears, is that okay?
But if someone watches Netflix beforehand and does not download a 65 GB update at the same time, is that a mistake?

I'm afraid that in such a situation most DSL lines are the limiting factor. Here in the region it would not be possible to see e.g. Netflix and start a large download at the same time.

The nightly update campaign is much more effective, especially since it is time-limited.
I can imagine that when the box is fully used, more power is consumed by parallel tasks than in standby on the remaining 5 days.

  10. Re: Automatic game updates

    Author: PiranhA 08.07.15 - 16:23

Sorry, but that really doesn't make sense. On the one hand you can do things that don't require bandwidth, on the other hand there are enough people whose line is not being used by Netflix. The average in Germany is around 14 Mbit, which is more than Netflix needs at 1080p. And last but not least, there is something like QOS. When I download a file, the stream doesn't break on Netflix either. The Netflix app simply gets a higher priority and the problem is solved.
This also does not change the power consumption during standby.

  11. Re: Automatic game updates

    Author: Huetti 08.07.15 - 16:25

When the console starts, you want to have all the power and bandwidth available for gaming and not use it for background installations. Apart from that, the update process would be even more complicated, because the console would also have to manage what it is allowed to update and what not.

    Constructed scenario:
You start the console, there is a 2GB update for The Witcher, a 500 MB update for GTA and a 50 MB update for Netflix.
Now you want to start Netflix ... well, you can sit out the 50 MB update ... then The Witcher update starts in the background. Since you want to use the Netflix HD stream, the Witcher update only trundles through the line at a few kb / s ... after a 40 minute series you want to play The Witcher ... does not work because the update is running . Then stop GTA ... but it's stupid that they want an update now. You can sit out now, or you let your console run until all updates are through and then gamble.

So, now you have exactly the situation that you don't want ... you have a console that you can't do anything with because it is busy with updates all the time ...

The PS4 does the same thing, by the way, that automatic updates and background transfers only run when the console is in standby.

I see it this way: the increased electricity costs are the price for the convenience that the automatic updates offer me.

A compromise would be, for example, to hang the console on a switched socket and simply let it run for a night on standby after each game session and then completely disconnect it from the power ...

The PS4 does not only install updates in standby. If you do not use the "standby mode", they are simply downloaded and installed when the console is switched on.

    Mhh, no idea?
Well, it has to be mentioned that the PS4 only updates the last 5 (?) Games that have been used. If you now start a game that has not been touched for a long time, it must first be supplied with updates.

As a former DSL 6MBit-ler I can absolutely understand. The entire update management is designed for high bandwidths ...
Be it the daily update of the brand new game (it often happened that you had to install several gigabytes every day for game x) or other day-one patches, etc.
Not to mention purchases in the store.
Back then I had the console off during the day and then standby at night. In the evening you can't play your dream game if you are unlucky because the update takes several hours and the next update follows the next day. At least all downloads were finished by the weekend ... xD
Meanwhile, with Hybrid 100MBit, of course everything is no longer a problem ... everything goes in parallel. While updates are loading, I watch Prime ... unthinkable earlier.
Hence: I feel for you ;-)

That's not true.Yesterday, when I switched on my ps4, the gta update was pulled even though I haven't played it in a while. I have played 20 other games since then.

Some people have real problems .. Have you never started Steam and seen game updates download automatically? Do you then also complain that your Netflix stream "breaks down" or you do not have the full bandwidth to play any potentially other game on PC or console?

    Thank you, exactly like that!
There should even be people who watch something like BluRays or even these old DVDs on the XBox. After 2 hours of film, the DSL Lite line could be ready with the game updates. No, the updates only start when I want to play the game.

It can also be asked at startup whether the game updates should be installed in the background !?
