Indian Medical College

Government of Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College is a state medical college in Tamil Nadu. It was founded in 1986. The college is located in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India and is named after former Indian Iron and Steel Minister Mohan Kumaramangalam. It is recognized by the Medical Council of India. The school has 100 MBBS and 102 medical students. The government's Mohan Kumaramangalam Nursing College is located in a separate building on campus.


The Salem Government District Hospital was built by the British Government in 1913. The campus stretched over 13 hectares. The hospital was intended to serve both residents and British officers in the unified Salem district.

In October 1988, then Indian Prime Minister Shri broke ground for the government's Mohan Kumaramanagalam Medical College (GMKMC). Rajiv Gandhi. The college opened in 1990 and its first senior class had only 65 MBBS students.

Salem Medical College was named in honor of then Minister of Steel Mohan Kumaramangalam, who was born in Kumaramangalam, an area near Thiruchengode (the then unified Salem District, now part of Namakkal District). In 2013, the number of MBBS student seats rose to 100. The college celebrated its silver anniversary in 2015.

The college campus has fully functional classrooms (100 students) in all preclinical departments.

Each department has a good infrastructure and all important learning content.


There is a well-equipped, air-conditioned library that can accommodate almost 200 students at a time. A separate reading room for books is available separately and offers space for 70 students each. A computerized e-library with 40 computers is available. There is also a separate, air-conditioned study room for professors and other teaching staff that can accommodate almost 20 people each. There is sufficient parking space for doctors and students outside the site.

Lecture hall

Almost 250 students can be accommodated in a single lecture hall (out of 4 old ones) and almost 350 students in the new lecture hall. All lecture halls are well equipped with projector facilities and a computer for digital learning. Both lecture hall buildings are fully air-conditioned. Each lecture hall is equipped with separate toilets for men and women. Sufficient parking spaces are available in front of the lecture hall.


Both the men's and women's hostels are equipped with 24-hour water and electricity systems. Accommodation is free. Meal fees are borne by students. The Gents Hostel offers 120 rooms. The Ladies Hostel offers 140 rooms. Toilets and bathing facilities are available. RO system for purified drinking water is available. Security guards are deployed around the clock for the safety of the students. The hostel is surrounded by a twelve foot high composite wall with fences. Sufficient parking space available. The hostel is completely safe for students with no black spots in history. A large cricket and soccer field with a separate volleyball and basketball area is available for men and women.

Bus system

The college has buses that take students to government clinical assignments on a daily basis. Hospital (GMKMCH) in the city of Salem, for their clinical postings. Both ascents and descents are offered. Bus connections are free. All students can use the bus system. Aside from the college-provided bus facility, there is a bus stop right outside the college campus where all local (state and private) and moffussil buses are available from 4am until late at night. The college premises are connected with high quality street facilities.


There is an auditorium (apart from two lecture halls) that can accommodate 350 students at a time, with well-equipped sound systems and screening facilities. There is a garden around the auditorium. There is parking. An auditorium is available.


There is a canteen with a capacity of fifty. There is a separate dining room for day school students where they can use it for lunch. Adequate water supply systems are equipped with suitable sanitary facilities and waste disposal facilities.

Exam room

The examination room has space for about 500 students, video surveillance and jammers. There is a room for utensils and bags in front of the examination room. A node center for the connection with the TNMGRMU is used to forward the live feed. Parking spaces are available.

A separate animal house building that works under the direct supervision of the Department of Pharmacology is available.

Nursing school

There is also a nursing school on campus that trains nearly 150 students for each batch. The infrastructure is well equipped with all the necessary requirements. With hostel facilities for women only, as well as food, water and sanitation.

Administrative block

There is a separate administrative block on campus where all official work, dean, headmaster and other officials are present. Open on weekdays at 9 a.m. and open until 6 p.m.


Two college buses transport medical students and take nursing students from college to hospital. The college campus is located on the four-lane road of the Salem Steel Mill (Tharamangalam). Buses connect the college to Salem Junction (within 3 miles), the new Salem Central bus stop (within 7 km) and the old Salem Town bus stop (within 10 km).

Salem Junction is the departmental headquarters of Salem on the S├╝dbahn and a junction of five railway lines. There are many trains going to Chennai, Erode, Coimbatore, Trichy, Virudachalam, Madurai, etc.

Salem Airport has flights to Chennai. Salem is the intersection of highway roads from Coimbatore, Bangalore, Karur and Chennai.

Medical quiz at the Glanzendo national level

GLANZENDO is a national-level Grand Intercollegiate Quiz competition run by the government. Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, Salem every year. It has been carried out successfully for more than six consecutive years. Glanzendo 6.0 - Pulmonoquest was the first national-level quiz conducted by Xorvianzz'17 involving more than 23 states and union territories. It had 1,100 teams and 3,300 participants.

GMC is a member of GMKMCH, a super special tertiary care hospital with around 2000 beds, 9 km from the college campus. The hospital spans 13 acres across from the Salem District Collector Office.

The super specialty block on the hospital campus adopted a green building model, similar to Delhi AIIMS. It houses all of the super specialty departments and an apex trauma center. The laboratories for stationary biochemistry, pathology and microbiology are located in the same building. The super specialty block contains central air conditioning and a conference room. It houses departments for neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, nephrology, urology, plastic surgery, endocrine surgery, and pediatric surgery. An OPD block with consulting rooms, demonstration halls, X-ray machines, a small operating room and an outpatient laboratory is available. There are separate buildings for the departments of internal medicine, general surgery, ophthalmology, radiation therapy, ENT surgery, ICTC and ART, RNTCP, TB ward and psychiatry.

A Center for Reproductive Health and Child Health (RCH), which houses the departments for pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, is considered a "competence center". More than 1000 babies are born at the RCH center each month, making it one of the largest mother and child hospitals in Tamil Nadu. CEmONC, O&G Casualty and OBG ICU give the RCH institute more fame.

GMKMCH has an institute for diabetology and an institute for burns. The central government sponsored VDRL laboratory is there.

The hospital has around 20 operating theaters and separate intensive care units for different departments: MICU (medical intensive care unit), PACU (post-anesthetic intensive care unit), SICU (surgical intensive care unit), intensive care unit (pediatric intensive care unit), intensive care unit for newborns, intensive care unit for newborns, and ICCU.

A DEIC OP (District Early Intervention and Counseling) is available on campus as part of the RBSK program. A separate block for forensics and toxicology with lecture theaters, mortuary and autopsy rooms is available. There are hostels for resident doctors and doctoral students on the hospital campus.

Under the supervision of the Department of Microbiology, two RT-PCR test centers have been set up to test for COVID-19 with a testing capacity of 4500 samples per day.
