How do airports manage their waste?

Airport of Palma de Mallorca

The airport has installed a waste processing plant to treat the urban waste generated by airport activity accordingly.

This plant has devices that, thanks to their design, allow a non-selective collection of municipal waste and a completely clean treatment of the same during storage and compression. The airport also has containers for the separate collection of paper and cardboard, glass and light packaging. In this way, adequate waste management is provided to the airlines that collect waste on their aircraft separately.

At the moment, paper and cardboard are collected separately in the administration and sales areas of the airport. A selective collection of glass and packaging is currently being implemented, particularly in the hospitality sector.

Hazardous waste

Some airport activities produce waste that is classified as hazardous waste by law. They mainly include used mineral oils, batteries and accumulators, CFCs, absorbents contaminated by the absorption of hydrocarbons, empty, contaminated packaging, etc.

Waste management must guarantee human health, environmental protection and the preservation of natural resources. The airport manages hazardous waste in accordance with legal requirements, for which the services of several waste managers authorized by the Ministry of the Environment of the Government of the Balearic Islands (Conselleria de Medi Ambient del Govern Balear) have been contracted.
