Why are suspenders worn?

Braces are attached like this!

There are different types of braces. Read here how you can attach your favorite suspenders to your trousers.

On Stropdassen.com we sell E.L. Cravatte. These suspenders can be attached to your pants in a number of ways. E.L. Cravatte has many different models of suspenders with different closures.

Before learning more about how to attach the suspenders to your pants, there is one rule that, at least according to official etiquette, must be followed. If you wear suspenders, there is no need to wear a belt!

Suspenders with brackets

Braces with clips can easily be attached to the waistband of your pants. We have braces with 3, 4 or 6 clips in our range. Also called 3-point, 4-point or 6-point locks.

Fasten suspenders with 3 clips

The suspenders with 3 brackets are Y-shaped suspenders. The suspenders can be attached to the waistband with 2 clips at the front and 1 clip at the back of the collar. This type of suspender is the most common and is therefore also available in many different colors. The braces are adjustable in size and available in widths of 2.5 cm and 3.5 cm. The brackets on the front should be attached about 11 cm from the trouser fastener. The bracket on the back can be attached in the middle. There is a possibility that the clip cannot be attached exactly in the middle due to the belt loops on the trousers (such as on jeans). In this case you should attach the clamp as close as possible (a little more to the left or right) to the "belt loop".

Fasten suspenders with 4 clips

The suspenders with 4 brackets are X-shaped suspenders. The suspenders can be attached to the waistband with 2 clips at the front and 2 clips at the back of the collar. The suspenders are available in a width of 2.5 cm and 3.5 cm. The suspenders with 4 brackets and a width of 3.5 cm are the XL variant. These suspenders are 140 cm long instead of the usual 120 cm and have extra sturdy clips. The brackets on the front should be attached about 11 cm from the trouser fastener. The brackets on the back can be attached as desired. One option is to place the brackets on the left and right about 5 cm from the center. Of course, a greater distance is also possible. Whatever you want. With 4 clamps, the trousers are usually held up evenly. Therefore, such suspenders often have a more functional function than the common X-shaped suspenders with 3 fasteners.

Fasten suspenders with 6 clips

The suspenders with 6 brackets are Y-shaped suspenders with leather loops, also called "flaps", with 2 clips at each end of a leather loop. These suspenders are most similar to the authentic button suspenders. We report further below about these suspenders, but then with brackets. The straps of the suspenders are 3.5 cm wide. The clips are attached in the same way as the authentic button braces. The four clips on the front are attached about 11 cm from the trouser fastener. Then leave a gap of 10 cm and attach the next bracket. On the back you can attach the two brackets left and right about 5 cm from the center.

Fasten suspenders with buttons

In addition to suspenders with brackets, we also have suspenders with buttons including leather loops in our range. These are suspenders that are made in the authentic manner of wearing suspenders. These suspenders are Y-shaped, 3.5 cm wide and come with clips and buttons as standard so that you can choose how you want to wear them. If you decide to wear the suspenders with brackets, you can read above (under the heading 3 brackets) how they are fastened.

If you opt for the authentic way and want to attach the suspenders to your pants with buttons, you can easily sew the buttons, if they are not already attached to your pants, to the waistband with a needle and thread. The buttons should be sewn on at the front about 11 cm from the bottom of the pants. On the back you should leave a space of 5 cm on the left and right from the center in order to attach the buttons to the waistband.

Now that you know where to attach the buttons, you probably have one more question. Namely: do you sew the buttons on the outside or inside of the waistband? Initially, the buttons were attached to the outside of the waistband. Nowadays, when suspenders are worn more as a fashion statement, it is common to place the buttons on the inside of the waistband. However, if you have jeans buttons available, you can again attach them to the outside. So there is no right or wrong. It's simply about which style you want to exude and what you personally like better.

You will receive 6 matching buttons for your suspenders as standard. We assume that you probably have several trousers that you want to wear the suspenders with, so you can purchase the buttons from us in a set of six. Practical, isn't it?
