Which browsers support WebSockets

Websocket client compatibility

Websockets are a technology that will play an important role on the web in the near future with HTML5 and CSS3.

The following web browsers are recommended:

  • Google Chrome
  • Apple Safari

Internet Explorer 9 does not currently support Websocket connections. The mobile Android browsers do not yet support web sockets either. However, support is expected to come in one of the next versions of the Android operating system.

ACTIVATION OF WEBSOCKETS IN MOZILLA FIREFOX AND OPERA

In Firefox 4 and Opera 11 you have to activate the websockets explicitly in order to be able to use the websocket client:

OPEN CONFIGURATION PAGE

Start the browser and enter "about: config" in the title bar.

Firefox only:
Confirm the security notice

ACTIVATE WEBSOCKETS

Enter Websocket in the filter.

Firefox:
Set the value "network.websocket.override-security-block" with a double click on the line to "true"

Opera:
Activate the field "Enable WebSockets" and click on "Save"

MEASURES IN CASE OF CONNECTION PROBLEMS

CLEAR CACHE

If the browser “hangs” while loading the web interface, this may be due to the browser-internal processes to increase performance. You can fix this problem by clearing your browser's cache.

For example, the “CTRL” + “F5” key combination clears the Google Chrome cache.

The keyboard shortcut for Safari is "CMD" + "ALT" + "E".

In Internet Explorer you will find the item “Internet Options” in the “View” menu. In the “Temporary Internet files” section, you can clear the cache by clicking the “Delete files” button.

Instructions for Mozilla Firefox can be found here.

ADD EXCEPTION FOR VIRUS SCANNER AND FIREWALL

Add an exception for the address of the miniserver on the network scanner of your firewall and virus scanner.

With the current version of the Avast! ® Free virus scanner, adding an exception rule has no effect. A connection can only be established if it is completely deactivated.

In this case we recommend using a different virus scanner.
