Long lists actually get traffic

Car widths in the construction site

Cars are getting wider. Today, 70 percent of all newly registered vehicles are wider than two meters. Too wide for many construction site lanes. Where can you find the car width in the vehicle registration document and how do you behave on the construction site. We answer the most important questions.

Cars are getting wider. A look at 1978 shows that compact-class cars (such as the VW Golf) were on average 1.59 meters wide at the time. Today vehicles in the same class have grown by around 20 centimeters by 1.78 meters. However, these dimensions do not yet reflect the actual width of the cars, as they do not include the exterior mirrors. If you add this to this, many cars today are wider than 2 meters.

Actual car width is not in the papers

If you want to know how wide your vehicle really is, a look at the vehicle documents will only help to a limited extent. Because here is only the value without exterior mirrors. However, drivers should find out about the actual width of their vehicle and, if necessary, measure it themselves.

We have measured over 200 current car models and compiled a list with the actual car widths:

Construction sites in Germany - where drivers' shoe pinches

Stress, fear, anger - driving through a motorway construction site is an enormous burden for many drivers. A recent survey by us shows that many road users complain about the long duration of the construction sites. Bad information and advice about the construction site as well as the insufficient width of the left lane in motorway construction sites are also objected to.

Car widths play an important role in construction sites

Knowing the width of the vehicle is very important, especially when driving on motorway construction sites. Because in many construction sites on Germany's autobahns, the narrowed lanes, especially on the left, are often only permitted for cars up to a maximum of two meters wide. For years, however, around 70 percent of newly registered cars with exterior mirrors have been wider than two meters. Even vehicles in the compact class (such as a VW Golf) are no longer allowed to drive in the narrow lanes. The result: In many construction site lanes, only small cars and motorcycles are allowed to drive on the left.

Narrowing the lane in construction sites to this level is no longer appropriate. Wider temporary lanes that allow an actual vehicle width of up to 2.1 meters are therefore necessary. Even then, drivers don't have much space. If you want to spare your nerves, you should therefore keep to the right. That hardly takes any time: on a five-kilometer construction site, 10 km / h more saves just 25 seconds.

This is how you can get through the construction site safely

The second most common cause of accidents on construction sites is collisions between vehicles driving side by side. In order to minimize this risk of accidents, we recommend driving staggered to construction sites and avoiding unnecessary overtaking maneuvers. The following also applies here: staggered driving only makes sense if the left lane can be used by a sufficient number of vehicles.

Traffic jams in front of construction sites can be avoided by maintaining the number of lanes on the construction site. If a track is lost, you have to thread yourself in using the zip fastener method. The following applies: drive as far as possible to the obstacle and only then thread it in. Failure to comply with the zip fastener method can result in a fine of 20 euros. In addition, drivers should drive particularly carefully on construction sites and keep a sufficient distance from the vehicle in front.
