West facing houses are good or bad
North, South, East, West - 5 Tips for Orienting Your Home
The Alignment of the house is a factor that is all too often underestimated when planning a house. However, if you want to make optimal use of the sun, you should think about it at the beginning of the planning. The orientation, and thus the incidence of the sun, has a great influence on this Wellbeing. Much more important, however, is that heating costs can be kept significantly lower with good alignment.
Rooms facing south receive the most sun in winter and in the transition period. In summer, however, it is the rooms on the west side that receive the most sunlight. The rooms in the east get most of the light in the morning, while the north rooms always remain quite dark.
Ideally, you should face the sun in your house and give the north side the cold shoulder. However, it must be clarified in advance whether the development plan allows this or not. In any case, you should seek advice from your architect and explore the various options before you commit yourself. Sensible planning can save you a lot of money in the long run.
It is also good to take a look at the building site at different times of the day and examine how the light behaves. Finally, neighboring buildings or trees can also have an impact on the incidence of light.
In the following, we will explain to you which direction is best for which rooms and which type of glazing:
Large south-facing windows
Generous glazing on the South side guarantees you a lot of sun in the rooms and thus better heating of the rooms in winter. Well-being also increases significantly in sunny rooms in winter. However, you should bear in mind that in summer the sun can be so strong that rooms facing south heat up too much. Therefore, a permanently installed, external sun protection is recommended for the warm months. External because it is more efficient than internal sun protection. With internal sun protection, the room can still heat up.
Be a little more reserved in the West
Since there is still a lot of sun arriving in the west at all times of the year (especially the evening sun), it is not bad to glaze more generously towards the west. The problem with room overheating in summer is also present here, or sometimes even greater, since the sun in the west shines particularly strongly on the building in summer. So it is ideal not to plan too little glass area in the west, but to place the living rooms mainly on the south side. South and West side should in any case be the favored sides for the living spaces, with a focus on the south.
Show the north the cold shoulder
In winter there is no direct solar radiation on the windows, the solar gains absolutely cannot compensate for the resulting heat losses. Since walls usually insulate much better than a window, a closed construction is recommended here. Follow up north also ideally in rooms in which you need little daylight. The entrance is well placed here, and a staircase is also ideal for the north. Bedrooms are also conceivable in the north, but if in doubt, better off on the east side, as the morning sun is pleasant to get out of bed better.
If you are planning a garage, you can also accommodate it very well on the north side. It is of course ideal if the street side is also the north side.
The sun is rising on the east side
The sun rises in the east, and who doesn't like to get up with some sunlight on their faces? This may not be the ideal solution for late risers and morning grouches, but most people prefer it when the sun falls into the bedroom in the morning. Kitchen rooms are also well located in the east.
Alignment of the roof ridge
If circumstances permit, you should align the roof ridge in an east-west direction. This orientation makes the south-facing of the glazing much easier, as you can also glaze on the upper floor without having to plan a dormer. This also enables the optimal positioning of a solar system on the south side of the roof. If you want to use a photovoltaic system in the future, this orientation is essential. With a south-east orientation of the ridge, a solar system usually does not make sense.
However, there is always the option of installing solar panels on the southern facade of the house. There are now also facade elements in which photovoltaics are included.
If you are planning a flat roof, nothing else needs to be considered on the roof side. However, even with flat roofs, a solar system cannot always be implemented.
The best thing to do is to examine in detail what options are given according to the development plan. If you cannot align your house ideally, this is not the end of the world either and should not slow you down in your company. But the authorities often let themselves be spoken to, because saving energy is a good argument for an exemption.
