What is an MBA?
The “Master of Business Administration” is probably the best-known degree from the Masters family and has its origins in the USA. An MBA has long been the most popular degree among master’s degrees. The title “MBA” has spread over time and is now recognized worldwide as a degree. An MBA combines practice and work with theoretical knowledge. Since when have there been MBA programs?
The first master's degree in business was offered in 1902 at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. The American concept of a practical and excellent business education caused a sensation. From the 1950s, the importance of the MBA programs increased even further. The course program was supplemented by mandatory compulsory courses (management, finance, marketing, accounting). Until 1950, the MBA was intended more as a deepening and specialization of knowledge and economic knowledge, but now the focus is shifting. In addition to technical knowledge, more attention is paid to the integration of training in social skills (leadership skills, team building, motivation, correct use of the available resources).
The 60s and 70s saw massive criticism of the MBA programs. Well-known business magazines predict a steady demise of these training programs with fewer students and graduates. Despite the predictions, however, the MBA programs experienced a real boom. More and more programs were offered in the US. After the anti-capitalism mood of the 1960s, the access rate rose again. Students from other subjects whose work situation had deteriorated (law, history, philosophy, etc.) as well as female students, members of minorities and international students hoped for new opportunities from the MBA programs.
The business schools responded to this trend by introducing new training methods and modules. The success of the MBA programs was also reflected in the above-average earnings of the graduates.
In the 1980s, there was heated discussion about the tough approach of young top managers regardless of people and the environment. “Materialism” and “arrogance” were two buzzwords that came up again and again in this context. As a result, in addition to technical training, the top schools are increasingly relying on the ability to cooperate and social skills. Information on economic, social and political framework conditions was also integrated into the training program, as was team leadership, presentation and negotiation techniques.
More than at the beginning of the 20th century, top MBA programs today have to pay attention to flexibility in their module design at a continuously high level. Today, the MBA is no longer a direct guarantee of top management training and expert knowledge, but it can still be.

Can I complete an MBA course parallel to my job?

What is the difference between an MBA and a Masters program?
Although the MBA as a “Master of Business Administration” is also a master’s degree, it is often viewed separately from all other master’s degrees. In contrast to the consecutive Master’s degree (as a continuation of a previously completed Bachelor’s degree), the MBA is a non-consecutive form of study. This means that the MBA does not provide further training in the subject of the completed main course, but rather provides additional qualifications for (prospective) managers in general management programs or for specialists in professional programs. Depending on the type of study, the duration of the study program is between 9 and 24 months (full-time) or 2 and 8 years (part-time). A distance or online course can be studied at any time and place; you complete it “at your own desk”, so to speak, with the self-study phases being supplemented by presence phases at the business school.
An additional distinguishing feature in addition to the type of study is the specific objective of the program. While a "Junior MBA program" is aimed primarily at university graduates, the so-called "Executive MBA program" is aimed more at prospective students with several years of professional or leadership experience.
What is the difference between an MBA and a Executive MBA?
The Executive MBA, also known as EMBA for short, is a special study program that was developed in addition to the original MBA (Master of Business Administration). The course is completed in part-time programs while working and enables a company-related MBA degree in a maximum of two years. Above all, it meets the needs of managers and executives who work full-time and would like to upgrade their career position.

Because participants can continue to do their work, this type of study usually does not include a practical semester. The lessons usually take place in the evenings or on the weekends. Since the schedule of an Executive MBA is kept very compact, very little can be said about a specialization. The participants of an Executive MBA are very time-consuming.
What is a MAS?
MAS stands in the long form for Master of Advanced Studies and is a title that is mainly obtained after completing a Master’s degree in Switzerland. The MAS is a further education for people with a university degree and relevant professional experience, it is mainly acquired as part of a postgraduate course at Swiss universities and technical colleges.
In Austria, the title MAS has been awarded since 1999 and marks the successful completion of a university course, a course for further education, a university course or a course with a university character.
In Germany, the MAS is not assessed as an academic university degree, but as a "postgraduate degree program (PGS)". According to a resolution of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of April 14, 2000, it may be used, stating the university that awarded the title. Basically, the MAS is an in-depth and specialization course with different levels, but it is not part of the academic master’s degrees of the Bologna Process.
The Bologna Process means the harmonization of study programs and degrees in relation to Europe as well as a transnational higher education reform aimed at the international mobility of students. An MAS degree can be completed in a minimum of 15 months and part-time in around two years, which corresponds to a workload of around 1,800 hours. In some cases, an MAS program has a modular structure. As mentioned at the beginning, several years of professional experience and a degree from a university (university or technical college) or an equivalent qualification are expected for admission - e.g. B. a diploma from a higher technical school or a higher technical examination plus qualified work experience with managerial or departmental responsibility.

What does an MBA program cost?
In many cases, the price of an MBA program (only Master of Business Administration, no other Master) depends very much on the level of awareness of a school. As with other branded products, a partial amount is paid for the name (ie the “brand”) of the business school. So you should be very clear about what you expect from the MBA program, how much budget you have available for it and whether the selected program can meet these expectations. When calculating the costs, one should not only include the tuition fees and also not neglect the cost of living.
Does an MBA course cost more than another master's course?
The cost of an MBA program is usually quite a bit higher than that of another Masters. How do I know the quality of an MBA or Masters program?

11 rules of thumb for assessing the quality of MBA and master’s programs
These tips serve the objective quality assessment (but not personal suitability) from the outside and are only intended as guidelines.
1. Provider location / title allocation
Who actually awards the degree? Often you will find local marketing offices of international schools. Sometimes there are also collaborations in which the domestic organization is only responsible for participant marketing. If the MBA or Master’s degree is awarded outside the EU, caution should be exercised. The use of the title is then only possible with the approval of the respective ministry of education, which implements equality according to its own criteria. If the foreign master’s degree is not a degree in the sense of the authority, the title is usually refused.
Has the respective study program been checked by a recognized accreditation agency? Has the accreditation already been completed or is it still valid? If in doubt, it is worth taking a look at the website of the respective accreditation agency.
3. How long has the provider been on the market?
New providers don't have to be bad. But it is mostly still being optimized in the first few years. Are there any graduates who can be interviewed? What is the reputation like?
4. Who are the shareholders of a business school?
- Public shareholders
Universities, federal government, states or municipalities usually ensure compliance with all education-relevant topics with such a provider: Great security, but often pragmatic approaches.
- Private-public partnership
A model that has often proven itself in practice: the public sector and companies jointly form the shareholder structure, which combines security and dynamism as well as possible. However, you should ask yourself who is involved and to what extent, i.e. which forces make up the majority?
Private shareholders can stand for highly dynamic, market-oriented educational organizations. It is often possible to adapt the content to customer needs. But this is also where the danger of “title makers” is greatest. Organizations with such a shareholder structure must in any case be examined carefully.
5. ECTS points
ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer System and shows the workload of a training program. ECTS points say little about the quality of the respective offer. The workload is calculated from factors such as the attendance hours, e-learning modules, self-study phases and the effort required for the thesis.
Attention: Although the purpose of the ECTS workload points would actually be to establish a clear comparison across Europe, the practice does not look like this.
Austria calculates differently and awards higher ECTS points for the respective performance. For example, it may now be the case that an equivalent MBA program in Austria awards 150 ECTS points - but only 75 points are awarded in Germany. In Germany, however, this Austrian MBA would also be “only” worth 75 points and not 150 points.
Curious: as soon as an accreditation agency such as FIBAA accredits such an Austrian program, the points are set to “German level”. This means that the providers to be compared would be equivalent if both are accredited by FIBAA.
6. What is the reputation or reputation like?
How is a training organization perceived by the personnel decision-makers? The rule here is mostly: the better known, the better. In practice, however, this is difficult to determine. Clue: University rankings - which mostly only make a statement for the “world's top 20 schools”.
7. Are there references from outside? How safe is it to continue?
E.g.: graduates who you can interview or companies that work closely with the provider? How many past graduates has a program already had? The more, the more likely it will be continued after your year. The discontinuation of a study program can have a negative impact on the labor market for previous graduates.
Beware of “abnormal” pricing. Part-time MBA programs that cost less than 10,000 and over 40,000 euros should be given special focus.
9. Alumni / network
Almost as important as the course itself is the alumni organization. This should ensure that you can still benefit from it years after you graduate. Targeted inquiries from the provider can often shed light on this: How many graduates does this alumni organization include? How is the network concept lived? Alumni websites often also provide information on size and activities.
10. Illuminate the participant structure
The fellow students are an important factor in an MBA program. Not only that a lot of work is done in teams, your fellow students form the network together with you and form the outside opinion about the respective provider. A high percentage of international students would be desirable. The admission requirements (degree, professional experience, management experience) etc. can also be an indication of the “other” participants.

How is an admission application evaluated?

However, GMAT or GRE tests, which allow the only objective statements about a candidate, are also becoming increasingly important. If the result is too bad, an application is often not given any further attention. GMAT and GRE are basic requirements in almost all US schools.
There is a tendency in Europe to establish the GMAT as a compulsory examination. Currently, however, only about 10% of all German-speaking business schools require this test to be taken. What is the significance of ECTS points?
The ECTS, European Credit Transfer (and Accumulation) System, aims to make student achievements comparable so that they can be credited and accumulated when moving from one university to another. Students who have successfully completed a module receive a fixed number of credit points. This type of assessment of performance is typical for Bachelor and Master programs.
The credit points (LP) should represent the average workload of the course (the “workload”). The basis for awarding the credit points is the assumption of an average workload measured in hours for the degree. The effort of 1,500 - 1,800 hours per academic year is expressed in 60 credit points. One credit point corresponds to 25 to 30 hours of work. With the ECTS system, the average learning, preparation and follow-up effort of an event can be taken into account over the weekly hours of the semester. In the case of modules with increased workload, this is not evident from the presence at the university (semester hours); however, by the number of CPs acquired, where the CPs for the entire module represent the sum of the costs for the individual module parts. A different number of LPs can therefore be acquired for events with the same attendance time.

“Title mills” prefer to settle where academic standards are not or insufficiently defined. Laws that are supposed to prevent title trading always have loopholes that are used by the title mills. Some title mills escape criminal and civil prosecution simply by selling the titles exclusively abroad.
Title mills are particularly questionable for two reasons: On the one hand, because they make it possible for your unqualified graduates to carry out activities in which they cause damage due to insufficient qualifications. Because there are not only MBAs to be acquired, but also doctoral degrees in the fields of medicine, psychology or education. On the other hand, title mills make it more difficult for HR managers to evaluate an applicant, since the authenticity of the MBA or Masters has to be checked every time.
The use of a false or worthless title does not even have to be noticed if the person concerned has already gained the necessary knowledge and experience in professional life. However, striving for a management position as a newcomer to the profession with a fake or inferior diploma is risky. Even if the assessment center can be fooled, the wrong MBA will not be up to the demands of the company. But there should also be management positions in which one does not have to do any work, but only has to carry “the responsibility”. And after all, quite a few have managed to use a false title for years and to exercise a corresponding activity without this being discovered.
